“The Second Evasion” and the unanswered questions of justice in the aftermath of the Beirut Port explosion is the topic of the third session of the Ten Years Together gatherings, organized by the partners of Ettijahat – Independent Culture in Beirut as part of the programming of the 2021 MINA Forum: Artistic Ports and Passages. These gatherings provide an opportunity to interact with the audience and the city, as well as to reflect on art and its challenges.

After the end of the Lebanese Civil War in 1990, Lebanon’s warlords managed to evade accountability by issuing a general amnesty law, which allowed them to govern the country through a sectarian power sharing system, thereby normalizing impunity. The crime of the Beirut Port explosion once again put the ability of the Lebanese people to achieve accountability to the test and raised new concerns with regard to impunity. However, people’s fears are justified and understandable, as they live in a region where perpetrators – whether regimes, parties or leaders – are never held accountable.

By achieving justice for the victims of the Beirut Port explosion, we would be taking a first step towards achieving justice for all the victims who have been denied this right for decades. “The Second Evasion” is a film directed by Diana Moukalled and produced by Daraj.

Speakers: Ahmad Mroueh, Diana Moukalled, Maya El Ammar, Petra Serhal

Place: Orient-Institut Beirut

Date: September 27, 8:00 pm
