Based on an expedition to Yaman Prof. Diem prepares a general classification about the Yemeni dialects of the whole country. After introducing the common features of the Yemeni dialects in regards to the Modern Standard Arabic, Diem displays the differing dialects in five areas and characterizes their characteristics.

Werner Diem was Professor for Islamic Studies and Semitic Languages. He is co-editor of the Zeitschrift der Deutschen Morgenländischen Gesellschaft in the section Arabic studies and Islamic studies. His research ares include classic arabic philology, as well as arabic papyrology and diplomatics.
